LOW MOISTURE CONTENT - Our rock comes from dry climates. This is very important as you do not want moisture caught inside your rock. (NEVER USE LANDSCAPING ROCK in your grill or any flame environment. When water trapped deep in the rock turns to steam, the pressure can actually cause the rocks to explode!)
HEAT RETENTION - Natural lava rock helps to retain heat, especially on cold or windy days. It also increases your grill's maximum temperature.
BETTER GRILLING FLAVOR - Super-heated rocks vaporize drippings creating smoke to add grilling flavor.
FRIEND TO WOOD CHIPS - Lava rocks are a convenient base for wood chips. Place wood chips directly on the rock. A separate box is not needed. When the wood chips burn up, it's easy to add more.
FLARE-UP SUPPRESSION - Multiple layers of porous rock absorb much of the grease they don't vaporize, reducing the amount that can catch fire.

Every 5 lbs of lava rock covers approximately 150 square inches with one layer. The numbers below are based off of a fire pit being in a circular shape. If your fire pit is a circle, you will need to know the diameter of your fire pit.
